Tell Edmonton to Let Lucy Live Free

For over 30 years, Lucy has been held captive in a small zoo enclosure in frigid Edmonton, Alberta, and for more than three years, she’s been without the companionship of other elephants.

Lucy’s life at the Edmonton Valley Zoo—which was identified by elephant biologist Winnie Kiiru as the worst zoo in Canada for elephants—is a miserable contrast to what she would experience in the wild. Female elephants are highly social and suffer greatly when kept in isolation. Edmonton’s freezing winter weather and the zoo’s policy of locking Lucy indoors during the winter and when the zoo is closed means that Lucy spends the majority of her time in a small barn. When she is allowed outside, she is restricted to an enclosure that is less than an acre in size.

Lucy exhibits signs of mental distress and has health issues—including upper respiratory problems, arthritis, obesity, and chronic foot ailments—as a result of the substandard and inadequate conditions at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. These health problems are further aggravated by the region’s frigid climate.

The city of Toronto recently agreed to release the elephants at its city zoo to a sanctuary by the end of 2012 and also formally urged Edmonton to do the same with Lucy. This is a huge step forward, and it’s time for Edmonton to follow Toronto’s example!

The only way to ensure that Lucy’s suffering doesn’t continue—and that her health conditions don’t eventually kill her—is to transfer her to a sanctuary. The Performing Animal Welfare Society sanctuary in California can offer Lucy ponds for bathing, fresh vegetation and foraging opportunities, the freedom to roam over many acres of natural habitat, and the company of other elephants.

Please urge Mayor Don Iveson and the Edmonton City Council to do whatever is necessary to get Lucy relocated to a sanctuary and to close the zoo’s elephant exhibit permanently.

I sent the following, with a copy to the Councillors. Please feel free to use it if it helps:

    The Honourable Stephen Mandel
    Mayor of Edmonton

I am writing to express my concern for the welfare of Lucy, a female Asian elephant currently living alone at the Edmonton Valley Zoo.

According to PETA, “Lucy exhibits signs of mental distress and has health issues—including upper respiratory problems, arthritis, obesity, and chronic foot ailments—as a result of the substandard and inadequate conditions at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. These health problems are further aggravated by the region’s frigid climate.”

The city of Toronto has agreed to release the elephants at its city zoo to a sanctuary by the end of 2012. Surely Edmonton would like to present a similar forward-thinking image. As a tourist, I would choose to travel to Toronto rather than Edmonton, based on the Lucy issue alone, until she is compassionately sent to a sanctuary. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way.

I strongly and respectfully urge the Edmonton City Council to move Lucy to the PAWS sanctuary in California as soon as possible and to close the zoo’s elephant exhibit permanently.

    Thank you for your consideration.

This is sickening! Lost faith in humanity! We all know who the real animals are right here!
Please help poor Lucy to be free. Please help all the animals over there to have a life they deserve and free from captivity. They have done no harm to you whatsoever that you have any right to hold back their freedom and control the way they live, the boundaries on earth which they could walk on or the mates they should choose (or lack thereof). People who visit these exhibition are none but sadists. Close the exhibition down and might aswell open a satanic temple if pleasure of throwing popcorns laughing at these poor animals grief is what they are looking for.

I live in Edmonton… And i had a personal chat with Mandel considering he a family friend… :/ he said he is doing his best to help… And that he cares deeply for the animals in our Zoo and that it is an attraction of Edmonton and will bring more money in to help with the animals. I tried to explain that it was an urgent issue and he said he has alot of things to handle. Then he told me i could leave… :/
