Schools Are Bullying Donkeys for Money

Every year, schools, clubs, Future Farmers of America chapters, and recreation departments across the country make asses out of themselves by hosting cruel “donkey basketball” games as fundraisers and placing the lives of animals, participants, and bystanders at risk.

Aside from being stinkin’ adorable, donkeys are patient, kind, and smart—like really, really smart! They can recognize the faces of animals they haven’t seen for years, and they feel pain and fear, just like the cats and dogs you might share your home with. As you can see from the video above, donkeys DON’T enjoy these events, which are likely terrifying and confusing for them. Seriously, just look how f*cked up this is:

Donkeys aren’t stubborn—they’re just very cautious. Sometimes when they feel super-scared, they lie down or plant their feet and refuse to move while they scope out the situation. Donkeys don’t usually run away out of fear.

They can only safely carry up to 30 percent of their body weight. The average donkey weighs about 350 pounds, so that means that they can only safely carry about 110 pounds. That’s less than most full-grown adults or even growing teenagers weigh. Carrying heavy loads can lead to stress and pain in the animals’ backs.

Donkey basketball fundraisers send students the message that it’s OK to bully and humiliate others in the name of “fun.”

These events are dangerous for humans, too: Players have been kicked by frightened animals and have sustained broken legs, arms, and wrists—and some have even experienced concussions after being slammed to the floor.

So let’s put donkey basketball out to pasture! Share this blog post with your friends and family, and urge them never to attend a donkey basketball game. If you hear that any school or organization plans to hold one of these games, speak out and let us know about it.
