Horse Slaughter to Start Again in US

After a 5-year hiatus, Congress has restored funding for U.S. inspectors to oversee horse slaughter, opening the door for horses to be killed and butchered in the United States for the first time since 2006.

No one wants to see any horse killed for meat or to turn a fast buck, and PETA has always had concerns about the suspension of US slaughter, since it meant more suffering for these sensitive animals, not less.  What we feared would happen did: Rather than have a change of heart and stop killing horses, greedy ranchers who deal in horse flesh simply jammed their “commodities” into tractor trailers and hauled the frightened animals hundreds of miles to Canada and Mexico – a journey most did not have to face before – to terrifying deaths in slaughterhouses there.

As PETA documented years ago, that ride means horses crammed together with strangers who bite and kick, slippery floors that mean foals and pregnant mares fall and are trampled, and horses who, being taller than cows but often shipped in cattle trucks, must ride the whole way with their heads bent to their chests. That export loophole still needs to be slammed shut. To reduce horses’ suffering, there must be a ban on exports of live horses together with a ban on slaughter in the U.S., or it doesn’t work, never did, never will.

Remember, industries that breed horses for profit—horseracingrodeo and the carriage trade—are largely to blame for this crisis since they have created the tragic overpopulation of horses.

I hate heartless people….people are getting worse and worse about killing everything that turns “bad.” They are NOT bad they are just seen differently. They need to be put up for adoption so they can find a true family that loves them so…but never the less, there are sick horrible people out there that don’t give a crap about anything, except money… I wish we could do something big for the horses. Something like go on strike in front of the presidents building. Something to get more attention…something so people would understand… I am a major horse lover. I’m not a fighter but I’ll fight fir what I love. <3

This is absolutely sick. I can’t even believe that human’s can be so cruel to animals. We should all have the same rights. No animal deserves’s to be killed or slaughtered. This just makes me hate being a human. What kind of world do we live in? And how can ANYONE sign something like this and AGREE to torture these sweet, loving, innocent animals ??!?! This is simply SICK.

Equine killing is not acceptable under ANY circumstance.
Many of these animals can be used for good.
Organization, funding and care are the main hurdles.
The past has shown us how this creature can help our future. Hope and friendship like no other can be gained by a young persons bond with a horse. Work and transportation may, in the upcoming years, need to be accomplished as well.
Gentle when treated that way, horses should be allowed to help us. If you are of like mind, please ask Ellen DeGeneres to help us find a way to SAVE THE HORSES!

I happen to own two horses. One of which I rescued after he was abandoned without food for two years and the other who I rescued after she was taken off the track for being “too slow”. I had my barnowner tell me “It is fine to shoot a horse in the head, it is okay to slaughter them.” After this, I promptly moved my horses. Horses are phenomenal creatures that do not deserve this type of treatment. As if the actual slaughter isn’t bad enough, they have to live in horrid conditions for long periods of time. It starts with our horse auctions. They need to ban meat buyers. Overall, the biggest thing we need is a ban on the export of these horses as well as the slaughter of them. AND GET HORSE SLAUGHTER THE HELL OUT OF CANADA.

We all concentrate on the result of the actual problem. Too many horses are bred to support the various ‘sport’ that those horses are needed for to make MONEY for the humans. Target those breeders and those ‘sport’-institutions and ‘kill’ the problem at the root… If not that… we are fighting a battle already lost.

In America we don’t eat horse meat because we consider a horse a pet.We don’t eat our cats, dogs, or horses. The mass breeding has got to stop just like the puppy mills that need to be shut down.Anyone breeding horses for what ever reason needs to have a limit placed on them.Just like we limit our dog breeders.

Obviously, Obama has NO regard for the health & well-being of these beautiful, defenseless animals! Here is an excerpt of the article:

    Obama Signs Horse Slaughter Bill
Posted by Jim Hoft on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 4:35 PM
Barack Obama restored the American horse-slaughter industry this month.
    The Washington Times reported:

President Obama earlier this month quietly signed into law a spending bill that restores the American horse-slaughter industry, just a few months after a government investigation said the ban on slaughtering for human consumption was backfiring.

The agriculture spending bill Mr. Obama signed the week before Thanksgiving did not include a ban on the inspection of horse meat — a backdoor prohibition that had, since 2006, effectively halted the U.S. horse-slaughter industry.

This decision is an abomination and should never happen! Isn’t it incredibly sad to see Congress fund such cruelty to our nation’s horses! Everyone knows today that the horseracing industry, rodeos and the carriage trade all have created the tragic overpopulation of horses!! Again, man screws up and who pays? Innocent animals, of course!

If we consider ourselves civilized in this country, we will ban exports of live horses with a ban on slaughter in the U.S! We will respect these animals rather than consider them only commodities that bring in $$$. Where is the compassion of the lawmakers? It is truly tragic to think that there is none in Congress!

I have loved horses all my life and even had one of my own. They are very intelligent and can feel fear, pain, hunger, and all other feelings. When they play they, laugh, jump, and chase each other.

Isn’t there any ranch that has space for these beautiful animals? I’m sure if someone with room for them out back on acres of grass and trees would invite all that are saved to come, people of PETA and other animal loving organizations would put up the money or the hands on help to get these horses over there.

Can you help with the trip to save a horse?… or more? Let this be a seed of thought for people who are able to make this dream come true, and let it grow. I am not able to help, I’m disabled and only have enough money to at least live in a house. If I won the lotto, I would be that person who opens some acreage for majestic animals like the horses. Thanks for reading and praying with me.

I think laws should be enforced and made stronger that punish people with prison time for not taking care of their own horses. I have kept my horses and when the time came paid to have them put to sleep then buried them, most people do this for their dogs so why not for their animals. I don’t have a problem with them doing it for older horses if that would be the case but I would never eat one and I love most all kinds of meat.

I have been vegetarian for 30 yrs for ETHICAL reasons, b/c of the conditions under which our meat animals must suffer HORRIBLY. Death for an animal isn’t what’s so terrible; it’s the way their lives are lived while they are here, and what we do to chickens, pigs and cows is unconscionable. Horses are my absolute passion in life, only second to my husband. Horses ARE my life! But here’s my question: Why is it OK to torture animals that do nothing more for us than feed us, but it’s NOT OK to kill an animal just b/c WE happen to “like” them? It’s all the same to the animal! And I’m in no way a religious person, but if you are, what about how the animal looks in God’s eyes? Is a horse “better” than a cow? If you live in India, it’s totally opposite! The COW is the one that is sacred!
I will tell you what happened after the slaughterhouses were closed. HORSES LIVED IN HELL!!! Because people who could no longer care for them, or WOULD no longer care for them if they were old or sick, those horses were neglected, starved, abused, SET LOOSE in the woods where they either found their way out to roads and got hit, or slowly starved. IMO, horses who have lived most of their lives happy, but who end up in a slaughterhouse are MUCH better off than those that have been left to starve or die a slow death from disease or injuries left untreated.
I have found that the majority of people who object to horse slaughterhouses are NOT horse people. I know hundreds in the discipline I’m in, and almost without exception, my horse friends feel the same way.
What needs to change is not whether horses are slaughtered for meat. It is that the conditions of ALL meat animals needs to be humane and sensitive to the animals’ conditions during its life, and on its way to slaughter.

After a 5-year hiatus, Congress has restored funding for U.S. inspectors to oversee horse slaughter, opening the door for horses to be killed and butchered in the United States for the first time since 2006. Did Obama do this?? Seriously?? Maybe he should personally go himself and see what he is allowing!!! Take his daughters with him to see the person is really is!! And what kind of people can actually go through such a tragic action???

This is so sad, and disgusting! What can we do to try to stop it? Peta has to try to take action to stop this!

Horses should really be in the wild, like out west and stuff. We should stop breeding them in captivity altogether, because it’s not in the horses interests.

This is appaling. If we have retired race or other horses we need to put them on farms where people will love them and take care of them for the rest of their days. And where they can be appreciated and cherished for the gorgeous animals that they are. Not used for meat!!!!!

I am sure their are plenty of farms out in parts of NE and Iowa that would be willing to take in old, retired racehorces and care for and love them!!!!

The real problem is and Sunny touched on this is overpopulation. So it would be great if there were farms willing to take retired, lame, old and no longer wanted horses. However, there is an increased chance of more neglect and that these horses will die an inhumane death. In a perfect world this would be a non-issue, but in reality the better approach would be to look for humane ways to control the population and to insure less abuse, neglect and unnecessary slaughter.

It is disgusting that these practices still take place, even with laws preventing slaughter in the US, these abusers think that they are smart finding loopholes to carry on. However there is nothing clever about the slaughter of any animals and with PETA bringing this to the attention of the world, i believe that changes can be made for the better. Laws need to be stricter and enforced to save these beautiful creatures.

Horse slaughter approval also means the BLM will have an easier time transferring wild horses from their holding pens to slaughter houses in their ongoing efforts to decimate herds at the bequest of ranching lobbies. This is BAD BAD BAD!! :-(

This is shocking and sad news. Why can not they just retire the unproductive horses and let them live their natural death? US is such a rich country that it can feed them to bare minimum atleast till their last breath. PETA and other animal welfare organisations muct take serious action to stop such law. Its inhuman..!

I agree totally. We people of this rich country of the United States, and proving to be probably the most stable of all countries, even with all of our problems, we have continued to show our sustainability. This start of horse slaughter in this country is abominable. We must send the message to make those who breed these horses to show some constraint and sterilize horses, so that so many unwanted ones are not born. We who know that these animals are treated cruelly, and suffer physically with a mammal’s nervous system, must protest this Congressional action. And here it costs the government more money when we are trying to reduce spending. Let the ranchers pay for food for these horses. Let Congress know your thoughts.

It is Congress who restored the funding for this
