You’ve gotta love Nick Abell. Fur protests? Nick’s been there. McCruelty & KFC protests? Nick’s organized them. Police and TV crews? Nick’s not afraid (he follows the rules). This super-dedicated Street Teamer’s enthusiasm is contagious—don’t worry, you don’t need your swine flu mask for this fever!
We think Nick’s awesome, so we’re giving him our Star Street Teamer Award! In addition to you getting to read all about him, Nick will get a framed certificate acknowledging his hard work for those who don’t have a voice. Nick took a few minutes out of his busy schedule as full-time activist and high school student to do a short Q&A for us. Check out what he’s got to say:
What made you want to go vegetarian?
When I was on vacation in Park City, Utah, I saw a bunch of PETA protesters protesting a fur store. I had never heard of “PETA” and thought it was weird to be protesting something as “cool” as fur. They handed me a leaflet, and later read it when I was bored. I was horrified. I had NO IDEA the amount of cruelty that went into fur. I was interested in this “PETA” and I went to their website. I watched all the videos of KFC and McDonald’s cruelty and found that I could not eat meat any longer.
What’s your favorite vegan food?
My favorite vegan food is the veggie burgers and the “chili” fries from “Green” vegan restaurant
Which animal rights issues are you most passionate about?
Can I say all of them? Haha. If I had to choose one, I would choose the food industry. They were the very first thing that actually made me go veggie, and it just disgusts me by the amount of cruelty that goes into food. I am very passionate about spreading the truth, because the truth was the very thing that opened my eyes.
What made you want to do a protest against McCruelty?
The horrible undercover videos made me do a protest against McCruelty! I love when I have a chance to tell someone the truth about their “McMeal” and they tell me they are going to join my side and boycott them!
What did you do to prepare for your protest?
To prepare for the protest, my best friend and I both made some extra signs, just in case, we made a chicken mask, borrowed a megaphone, made/ordered some McCruelty shirts, and got people to say they were going!
What’s the strangest thing that you’ve seen happen at a protest?
The strangest thing I have ever seen happen at a protest was at the last one. All of the employees came outside screaming profanity at us telling us to “get off “their” f****** property!”… we were on the public side walk, and I calmly told them so. They called the police, and the officer showed up and asked me why I was there, he agreed with our message and told me he was never going to McDonalds again! Guess that backfired!
Do you have any tips for other Street Teamers who want to get active?
JUST DO IT! I used to make excuses saying “I had no time”… and “Others will do it for me” but the fact was, no one was and I did have time. I decided that I was going to do my very first protest, at KFC, and it went wonderfully!
