T-shirt Tuesday Giveaway: Cut Class, Not Frogs

Profile photo of peta2

Posted September 28, 2010 by peta2 staff

Every year, millions of frogs, rats, cats, mice, and other animals suffer and are killed for dissection. It’s not only cruel, but it’s bad for the environment, and it wrongly sends students the message that these animals are simply classroom tools. As we gear up for Cut Out Dissection Month (October), we thought it would be fitting to give away this awesome anti-dissection t-shirt:

For your chance to win one of three fitted American Apparel “Cut Class, Not Frogs” tees, comment below and tell us about some of the ways you’re going to speak up for animals used in classrooms this month. Entries must be received by October 4, 2010. Three winners will be chosen at random and notified on October 6, 2010.

Just so you know, by commenting here, you’re acknowledging that you’ve read and agreed to our privacy policy.

Also by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.

GOOD LUCK!

Just keepin’ it real,

I would encourage people to make models that look like frogs or have companies make ones that look real but aren’t the real stuff.
    FROGS have feelings too! :)

the topic of dissection is very important to me. i always encourage my classmates to do a virtual dissection instead. i mean, with the technology today, there really isn’t a point to dissecting real animals! i also have a lot of stickers and posters on my phone and in my locker which draws peoples attention to the animal issues i care about.

I work in a biology department of a university, and I am constantly talking to professors about how they can replace dissection in their labs. I find modules that I propose they could use instead of dissection, they I show them all the benefits such as: they are cheaper, there is less mess/clean up (gross, I know), students will get more involved that way, and then they can spend all the extra funds on another lab.

Also, I speak to students outside of class and make sure they know the department policy on dissection (if the professors knew I did this!…). Students can abstain from dissection, and the professor MUST allow them to make up the lab in another way, but many students do not know they have this option. I just make sure they know that they have a choice.

Things are improving–the professor that absolutely refused to change his ways and listen to a word I had to say RETIRED last May, so we do not have as many dead animals around the department anymore. The new anatomy professor is young and a vegetarian (!), so we speak often about ways we can teach anatomy without killing innocent animals. I think the vegan gods smiled down on me when we hired this guy!

For the physio lab, the animals are not killed, but they are tested on. I have spoken with that professor many times about alternate labs he could do, and I am always reading papers and printing off lab protocols for different labs he could try. If I already have everything set up and all he has to do is hand out the protocol to the students, I make it much easier for him to make changes.

Sometimes it feels frustrating that I work where I do, but I do feel like I am making changes, albeit small ones. But each change is a life saved or a life changed.

Well we are actually going to dissect frogs this year, but I’m going to choose not to because #1, many frogs die for the fact that ‘students’ need to dissect them for a pointless reason eithet than the fact that it is ‘necessary in order to pass science.’ #2, I saw pictures of frog dissection on my science textbook and it was DIS- GUSTING….. It almost made me throw up. I am not touching a dead frog…. Ever… And some of my friends, MOST of my friends think the same way too!! 😀

Everytime I talk on my cell phone people see my PETA stickers that say “I am not a nugget” or “Cut class not frogs.” People constantly ask me what the stickers mean and why I have a passion for saving animals lives. If I recieve this t-shirt, it will be more visible to the eye and it will get attention from many others, way more than a cell phone sticker anyway. 😀

Animals are living things with feelings and emotions. They ARE NOT objects we can use to examine. Just think about the pain those poor creatures go through every time someone harms them. What if it was you going through all that pain? Would you like that? Exactly, you wouldn’t. Then, why do some of us do that to animals? Because we consider them lesser beings? If that’s the case then you’re crazy. We’re equal and we share this world. Yes, I’m aware animals can’t speak or defend themselves (especially the little ones) but that should not be a reason to inflict pain on them. This month, I will talk about how important animals are to this world, and dissecting them just to learn about their insides is dumb. This month, I will also try to volunteer at my local animal shelter. Animals should be cared for, not killed.

I have already arranged a group, and found the dates thathey will be dissecting. and through the confirmation of the principal, and amendment number 1: freedom of speech, we will be protesting the disscetion days. We will be trying to avoid it, and convice them that its ridiculous for them to be doing this, that its not benfitting anyone in anyway.

Our anatomy and physiology class dissects cats. How gross! I am not in that class but a lot of my friends are. Students who follow a Health Occupation career path have to take this class. So even if they don’t want to cut up cats, but want to have the best preparation for a health career, they take the class. Now, I can print off the PDF about Pennsylvania’s students not having to dissect by law and I will give a copy to all the students in anatomy & physiology and let them decide for themselves.

So, this spring my AP Biology class is going to be disecting cats. I think its stupid and wrong. I have three cats and I dont need to know what they look like inside and out. There are books and virtual dissections that people can do and get as much education benefit from as a dissection on a real animal. Ive started a petition and everyone who signs has decied that were all going to skip and go to sunflower, a vegan cafe, for lunch, its gonna be great!

I have already started creating virtual items in Second Life, including an adorable frog that says “Cut class, not frogs. Don’t dissect” (sound familiar?). I plan to use these items to inform other people about the abuse that occurs when people dissect and I also plan to let them know there are very good alternatives to the education process involved.

iam going to speak up for animals this year. iam in bio honors this year and ive been talking about not dissecting the frog since day 2. if i get the shirt i would wear it as much as i can up to the day of the dissections and far beyond it. ive already made little flashcards that say this saying (and others of that sort with Peta2.com on them) and just left them on desks or tables for other students to find. also im working on getting a group together to make posters about the cruelty those animals go though.Ive talked to my principle about using the alternatives, he said get some info on it and to bring it to him this week. My moms starting to yell at me for doing all this lol, but the animals are just too cute and helpless!!! -Char <3

Okay, I’m totally against dissecting animals, but i moved to a new city and it was my first day at the new school, it was also the first day of dissection week, i was sooo heartbroken, and i would not touch the frog or even look at it, it made me soo sad and sick to my stomach! but the teacher wouldn’t let me go, so as my partner cut open that poor little creature, I had to read the directions, as if that isn’t bad to! i want to speak to everyone at school about this and try to put an end to this animal cruelty!!!! <3

Tradition has it that we always disect baby pigs. I’m hoping that I can break this tradition by showing the new disection video to my class, making a few minds realize how much impact a small decision in swiching to virtual disection, can have on themselves, the planet and of course the pigs :)

We will be debating soon in class about any topics of our choice, and as usual, mine will be about why animals have rights that need to be respected and what we need to do to show how much we love them. The subject might be getting annoying to my peers and disturbing with the facts that I share, but they need to learn and stop being ignorant to the cruelties and horrible things creatures of this earth live through daily.

Dissection is a cruel and unnecessary practice that needs to be put to an end. I have been active at school by refusing to dissect(sending letters to teachers so that I may be involved in alternative programs.) Also, we had to write a persuasive essay about the topic of our choice, and I figured it was a great opportunity to speak out against dissection. I plan to continue to be active this year in incorporating animal rights topics into school projects, as well as ALWAYS refusing to dissect. (Size medium, please?) *Sorry. Forgot to mention that. 😉

i am a senior this year. i hav an interest in anatomy. well.. at the beginning of the year i had second thoughts on if i wanted to keep the class or drop it. i went to my guidance teaacher to tell him my reasons. i told him i really am interested in this class but im worried about a specific assignment. dissecting. :[ itold him it went against evrything i believed in. he didnt want me to drop the class. he told me to talk to my teacher n ask if theres an alternative to dissecting. so italked to my teacher. n i found out… hes not really up for dissecting eithr. :] i asked him if wen it come to the day of it, if i could do sumthing else. he said “im sur we can find sumthing”. :] so.. my goal for this year is to talk my whole class into not dissecting n to take the alternative instead. n if i win this shirt b4 dissection day, i would proudly wear it to let peepl kno that theres bettr options than taking advantage of smaller creatures n using them as class experiments. evrytime ithink of dissecting, eating meat, wearing fur.. it makes me think “animals r our equals. if its legal for us to use them to wear, experiment on, n eat… would peepl wear their best friend or family member? would they ingest theyr children? would they poke n prod n make their same species suffer as they do othr animals?” if i get this shirt n wear it to school or out in public or around town. i want peepl to question me on y im wearing it. that way i can tell them to their face just how wrong our species is treating other species. n hopefully i can broaden peepls minds n mayb even change their outlook things. <3

I refuse to dissect anything in class. We haven’t started talking about that yet in Biology class, but when we get to that part of the class, I’ve already decided I don’t want to dissect. I think it’s cruel to cut up a defenseless little animal to learn something a textbook or diagram could show me. I urge my friends to say no to dissection as well and so far they seem to agree with me.

It reminds me of my high school years, a group of friends and I addressed our principal notifying him that we refused to participate in dissection and it led to the whole school being to choose virtual dissection or regular dissection. More and more people began to choose virtual dissection!

I, Fortunately, never had to disect. In all of my science classes through high school we used online disection programs and worksheets. There was a day that my anatomy class disected a CAT (But it was after graduation so I wasn’t there) the students didn’t even learn anything because they were gagging on the smell of formaldehyde.

I will have a group of friends picket outside the school with me. Or I will picket alone… Either way I’ll get the point across eventually. Last year in biology, we were expected to dissect frogs and sharks, and some of the older classes even dissected pigs.
I told my teacher on the very first day of school that I absolutely will not do that, receiving many strange looks from other students in the process. I was ready to put up a fight for what is right, but luckily my teacher understood, and is now one of my favorite teachers, for that and other reasons.
Most of the kids in my school think I’m weird for doing stuff like that, (I live in a rural town, lots of hunting, not to mention I’m the only vegan in town.), but it doesn’t bother me. I know I’m helping animals by my choices =D

on october 20something, in my biology class we will be disecting rats. and im totally against it, its cruel, and just wrong. i will speak up and i will refuse to do the project, and recieve my F. but no matter what they tell me i wont change my mind about it, because okay. so people say “its just a rat” but is it really “just a rat” no. its a living creature and its part of our world. and its torture! itd be like disecting a dead person, its just something you dont do, “but thats diffrent you cant torture people” you cant torture rats either but people still do it. disecting a rat is like disecting a human, because in a way rats are similar to us.
so i will not disect, torture or kill any animal.

Well, so far i have answered questions people have had previously in my classes like for example my teachers have never heard of a vegan, but i explained it to them an why i became one. And that reason being because i love animals and would do anything to stop the cruel things that happens to them.
And me and my two best friends are going to write letters to our schools telling that we dont care if they fail(well we do) but we just wont go near a frog on school property, unless we’re freeing them.
Evertime they talk about the frongs, crickets, or fish and how their for lab experiments i cry in class.
Just today i ask the biology teacher where they kept the frogs and she told me im not supposed to know so she didn’t tell me… just thought I’d share that. :)

When I was in high school, all year I was dreading the week where the biology class was supposed to dissect frogs. At the very beginning of the year, I asked if there would be an alternative assignment, but the teacher had told me to wait until that week. Well, when that week got there, I asked again and the teacher said that there was no alternative and I had to do the dissection. I brought this up with the pricipal and he replied with the same thing. I then looked up some alternative ways to learn the same stuff like a virtual dissection on the computer. They still said that I would have to do the real thing or take a zero. Though I had a 4.0 and didn’t want to lose it…I would rather fail than be a part of harming an innocent life.

Dissection came up later in my life, when I was asked to dissect a pig in a summer school program… I refused and had to talk to the director and arrange something else. They did allow me to do an alternative assignment but I would have taken a zero for that too.

I will always stand up for these innocent animals wherever I go and whoever I am with.

And I will pass out stickers (*v*)

I just study it from youtube videos and pictures from the internet. I am learning the material just as much if not more than others because I spend more time studying it. Dissection is not the only option to learn this information. unless you are going to be a vet or a doctor or something along those lines dissection should not be required.

My teacher explained to our class that for the sake of science it was different when you kill an animal. “They are specially bred for this.” Is what she had said. The entire time I wanted to say…” So if you were bred to be killed for the sake of “Science” you’d have no problem with being cut open?” This year I am planning on trying to convince my teacher and other teachers on campus to try the online dissection program that I hear is just as good if not better. The beginning of this month my Anatomy and Physiology teacher told me I am soon to dissect a cat in class. I spoke up against it personally, telling him all about how poor animals are killed just so that we could dissect them. Well, he basically told me he didn’t care what I thought and that I had to do it. So when time comes for the dissection I will present to him the law that allows me to chose not to dissect or I just won’t do it. I’m also informing others in the class that they don’t have to do it either.

When it was my turn to dissect in my 9th grade bio, I cried my eyes out and explained to the teacher my views on dissceting, I showed him leaflets and video’s on Peta’s page. Thankfully, he let me just write a three page essay on why dissecting was not necessary. I wrote about the many alternatives to dissecting for example, virtual dissecting. In stead of killing hundreds of frogs, why not kill none, and be able to see the same things on the computer? I got an A on the essay. Maybe I changed his views too. One could only hope…

You know what i will do when that happens? I have a really BIG mouth an i will tell my teacher an class that i refuse. There is no need to dissect an animal when there are computer programs available now. I would never dissect. Ever. I’d perfer to fail that damn class than to cut a Once alive creature . An i mean it. Now for the rest of the people, i will speak up an tell them why. It is cruel to dissect any animal. Its just not right. Why poke a defenseless animal? Why cut or dismantle or play with its body parts? Inhumane. I am going to speak up about this tomorrow, at my 1st Animal-Rights Club Meeting. Thank you peta!

If they did I would get a group of as many people as I could, hand out leaflets and make signs to convince people that dissection is wrong. And of course if my biology class had done a dissection, I would have said I’m not gonna do it and took an F and probably leave the room after trying to convince as many people as possible to come with me! :)

my old school still requires dissection for a passing grade in biology. last year when i took the class, i luckily had another peta2 lover as a friend during the period i was there. we talked with our teacher about how it was inhumane to use animals that way, especially with other means of learning about them. she was not supportive of our thoughts, and i ended up not going to school on the day of dissection. since i was gone, i was able to make up the work virtually (with my fellow vegetarian in that class) to still receive a good grade on the unit. this way, i was able to learn about the wildlife around me without any harm befalling them. <3
this is one of my favorite peta2 graphics by the way, besides the "love me; don't eat me" pig! :)

I will try to prevent any more dissections in my school, i know doing only my school ISN’T doing so much because I have a small school but that’s a good 20 frogs saved from dieing. When I had to dissect a frog, I told my teacher I couldn’t. She didn’t understand why and kept trying to get me to dissect it. When it came down to it, I left the class. All those days we dissected, I left. I got a 0 for that project but honestly, getting a 0 was worth it. I would have cried through the hole dissection. I wish I could get my sister’s school do not dissect but I don’t even think they do it. I prevented my friend not to dissect a cat in college. I told him about how wrong it was.. that day he actually cried to his teacher about how he couldn’t dissect it. HE ACTUALLY CRIED. He didn’t get a 0 because the teacher understood. I wish Everyone would understand why it’s not right.

I have always stood up and told people why it is wrong, i have actually taken a 0 for assignments which included animal cruelty. Many people always ask why i decided not to do it and why i have been a vegetarian for 6 years now but thats because its simply wrong. We dont kill humans on purpose to cut them open for no reason do we? No we dont so why should we as humans do those horrible things to an animal. It is simply WRONG.

Luckily they don’t dissect anymore around where I live, but Im sure that there are places that still do and Im going to make sure they stop it!Any time we are going to do a project about subject of choice, I will want to write about animal rights!Teach the people around me about what is going on!open their eyes to make them understand and hopefully, MAKE A CHANGE!
At least Israel wants to make a law against importing animal fur or producing it :) and hopefully the law will be excepted!

Me and my friends decided to write a letter to our school principal. In this letter we will ask , to stop our school from dissecting animals , because we actually have so many vegetarian people in our school that it wouldnt work out anyway. Even some of our teachers are more likely to help us. I have them “cut class , not frogs” stickers on my books. My teacher told me i can get in trouble , but i dont care ! Animals have the same rights as we do !

I’m speaking up for animals used in the classroom by changing my major at school! I am studying to be a high school teacher and originally I wanted to teach biology. I’ve been a vegetarian for 13 months now (originally to be healthier, but now for animals rights). I decided not only do I want to avoid taking classes that involve dissecting animals…but why would I want to TEACH kids to do that?? Now I’m studying to teach Spanish! :)

I let my school adviser know that I wouldn’t take an anatomy and physiology class that dissected animals, and am lucky that I am in a nursing school that doesn’t use animal dissection and the teachers are aware that it is a pointless and cruel exercise! I am writing to other nursing schools in my area to make sure none of them use dissection.

in my grade 11 science class I strongly opposed the dissection of fetal pigs.

When my teacher told me I had to do it to pass I straight up said “fail me then”. Luckily, he agreed to give me a written assignment instead.

It was a digram of the digestive system and all I had to do was label it.

Now, if he thinks that labeling a sheet of paper will teach me as much as the actual dissection, then dissection is obviously unnecessary.

Why a school would go out of their way, and waste their budget on purchasing dead babies, is beyond me.

I am not in high school, and the course I’m in now doesn’t try in force me against my beliefs (thank goodness), but I will always stick up for animals, live or not. Their lives deserve the same respect as ours and we don’t donate people’s bodies to science without consent.

My children and their classmates will never have to cut anyone open, I’ll make sure of it. That’s a promise. And I also promise to make noise when the subject comes up in other conversation.

Another thing I plan on doing is developing a kind of software (I am a graphic design student) that will allow for teachers to use “digital dissection” and make it as realistic as possible.

I think that dissection is disgusting, luckily I am home schooled, and I don’t have to dissect anything.
I am currently having people sign a petition to cut out dissection.
Dissection is cruel, and it is terrible, and I am completely against it.
I am informing everyone I know about animal rights, and I am trying to convince everyone not to dissect.

I stool up and told her i refuse to desect a frog and she told me to sit down and i told her i would not have any part in disecting frogs because i refuse to kill inisent animals. Anyway to make along story short i got sent to the principales office and i got suspended for 4 days. Just for standing up for my frog friends. But it was worth every second. Because i may of saved a couple of frong lives :)

I am a graduate student pursuing my Masters in Teaching, and I am currently a public school substitute teacher. I will use every opportunity given to me to act as a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves: the frogs. I will talk to students about the value of the frogs’ lives, and I will encourage them to show respect for the animals they encounter in their day to day lives. I will be an advocate for their plight, which is simply to live their lives as nature intended. I will talk to my baby niece about frogs and encourage her to protect them (which should be easy–seeing as how she loves reptiles and amphibians.) I will talk to my girlfriend’s niece and nephew and encourage them to respect the frogs. I will teach students to stand up for what they believe in, and I will encourage students to engage in their own form of non-violent protest by offering to write academic papers about frogs and their anatomy rather than participate in a dissection. The issue of frogs is a very personal one for me. I can’t deny, I love frogs. When I was a young boy growing up in the country, I steadfastly refused to participate in frog gigging, which I believed to be an unnaturally brutal sport that served little purpose. I didn’t want to take the life of another creature, human or animal. In college, I refused to participate in the frog dissection in my “Intro to Biology” class, choosing instead to allow my lab partner to do the dirty work for me. I intend to become a medical doctor, and yet I will never be able to shake the image of all those frogs being used in class, where boys giggled and girls became ill at the sights and smells. All life has value. All life has purpose. All life has intrinsic beauty. I love frogs. I always have, and I always will. I live out in the country now, and when I see a frog, I pick it up and help it get to a safer location, where it will not be stepped on or driven over. If I believe I have inadvertently driven over a frog, I mourn for its death, even if I have no proof that it was killed. Driving home late at night, I have nearly driven off the road in my desperate desire to avoid running over frogs or turtles. When I have my own classroom once again, I intend to put up posters which display messages regarding respect for Planet Earth and nature. I believe with great power comes great responsibility, and I have been given inordinate power in my life. I will utilize this power to act as an advocate for the frogs. Finally, this tee shirt is not for me; it’s for my girlfriend. I’ll encourage her to wear it when we go out (to King’s Island Amusement Park, or hiking at Bernheim Forest, or walking on the beach in Florida, or shopping at Whole Foods), and she can use the shirt as a plat-form to convey our shared message.

I’ve actually already fought this before at my college. My first semester of Anatomy and Physiology I, we were handed a syllabus that said we absolutely had to dissect a sheep’s brain and a cow eye, NO EXCEPTIONS. After speaking with my stubborn professor, I emailed peta2 and was given advice to avoid dissecting which alas, was ineffective. My boyfriend, who has terrible reactions to formaldehyde (nosebleeds, sinus headaches, you name it) even helped me to pass out your “Cut Class, Not Frogs” flyers around the science building AND post them on professor’s office doors. I didn’t fight nearly as hard as I should have, but come next semester, it’s on. Both the Dean and the Biology Department Head will be hearing from me. I’m hardworking and smart enough to earn my nursing degree, my refusal to dissect (and therefore earning me an F for the class) shouldn’t hold me back.

I attend school to be a Vet Assistant. I despise people who use animals for cruel purposes. Living on Long Island, I hear a lot about Plum Island, right off the coast of New York. I hate what they do there. I have read books and seen the propaganda. I will do whatever it takes to stop animal testing. I believe animals are the best, most special, amazing creatures in the world. Some are better than humans. I love this shirt and would be so proud to own it <3

I am planning on wearing a “Cut Class Not Frogs” sticker on my hand when the Biology class begins dissecting at school. I was in it last year, and I told the teacher my views on it and how I disagree with it. She let me skip every dissection class and it didn’t hurt my grade. It also brought attention to the subject because my classmates asked me why I was skipping. I plan on telling the people in that class about the ignorance of dissection again this year.

At my school, the digital dissection program has already been put into place for those who do not believe in live dissection. In my 4U Biology class, we were instructed to dissect a fetal pig. I and many others in the class were extremely against this, so I asked my professor if we would be able to perform the dissection digitally or not. She was extremely against the idea, so I told her “it’s either you pet us do it digitally, or were gonna have a protest outside the lab on the day of”. Well long story short, we got her to allow us to perform the dissection online, and we were all very proud of our efforts.
