Today’s 5 Questions blog comes courtesy of Portland, OR heavy metal-ers Toxic Holocaust. Vocalist Joel Grind was not only stoked to answer some questions for peta2 about being meat-free, but he’s also given us a brand new track off the band’s upcoming album, Conjure and Command, out July 19th on Relapse Records. Check out “Nowhere To Run” streaming exclusively on peta2, and enter the contest below for your chance to win a limited edition Conjure and Command CD/DVD!

1. What prompted you to become vegetarian? Were there any bands, books, etc. that influenced your decision?

I went vegan initially because I saw something on the internet about the amount of antibiotics that are pumped into the animals that we eat. It was a real eye opener. The more antibiotics we consume in our diet the less effective they are when we need to take them when we get sick. Then I realized they have to give them antibiotics because the animals are living in such close proximity to each other that it’s basically a breeding ground for diseases. Not exactly appetizing.

2. What are some of your favorite vegetarian foods?

I think my favorite food is probably Pho, which is a Vietnamese noodle soup that is traditionally made with beef broth. I make it with lots of vegetables and vegetable broth. It’s so good! Being vegan has given me more of an interest in cooking and being more adventurous with food.

3. Of all of the major animal rights issues are there any issues that are particularly close to your heart?

I think it would have to be factory farming. It’s cruel and it’s terrible for the environment.

4. If a fan were to approach you with questions about how to get involved with animal rights, what advice would you give him or her?

I think it starts with yourself. For me it is a personal choice and I never push it on anyone else. I feel I’m doing my part by not being a part of it. I think that’s the right way to go about it. If someone asks me about it, it means the interest is already there.

5. What does Toxic Holocaust have coming up that we can be looking forward to?

Toxic Holocaust has a new record coming out July 19th on Relapse Records called Conjure and Command—lots of touring to follow. You can check out some new songs and upcoming tour dates on our Facebook page.

For your chance to win a limited edition copy of Toxic Holocaust’s new album, Conjure and Command, with a bonus Live in London DVD, leave a comment below telling us your favorite vegan food to throw on the grill this summer. Entries must be received by June 8, 2011 and one winner will be chosen at random and notified on June 10, 2011. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited by law.

Huitlacoche tacos with blue tortillas. Huitlacoche is a mushroom that grows on the corn, if you put it inside a tortilla made of blue corn, grill it and top it with hot sauce, you have yourself a mexican vegan delicatessen.

Definitely tons of tofu dogs with mustard and hot sauce. New track sounds sick–looking forward to the new record immensely, as An Overdose of Death is still in heavy rotation on my turntable. Hell yeah!
