Why Veganism Is Not a 'Personal Choice'

When gathering petitions, leafleting, or just trying to eat lunch, how many times have you heard these things?

“Why are you TELLING people what to do?!”
“It’s my personal choice to eat meat!”
“Well, you’re entitled to your opinion …”

If you’re like me, it’s too many to count. You can give the best spiel about veganism to someone with ears wide open, and they can dismiss everything you say with “Well, it’s my right to eat meat!” and although lame, this response can throw even the most seasoned activist off. Let’s clear it up, shall we?

Veganism is not a personal choice—no more than it’s a personal choice to beat children, rape women, or hate people of another race or sexuality. Once your “choices” infringe on someone else’s freedom from suffering, it’s not your choice anymore. And as we know, the “choice” to eat meat (which, mind you, is never really given to kids and in some cases, strongly forced), affects millions of birds, fish, cows, pigs, and other animals every single year in the most cruel ways.

It’s no one’s “right” to mutilate, torture, and slaughter animals for products no one needs. Can you really watch this video with an open mind and defend it as our “right”?

The horrors of factory farming, animal testing, circuses, and on fur farms isn’t our opinion. It’s a fact. PETA and countless other animal advocacy groups have exposed factory farm and slaughterhouse workers stomping on and kicking chickens, ripping their heads off, ramming canes into the vaginas of mother pigs, viciously beating young calves, grinding up baby chickens alive, and more. There’s no need for “opinions” here, it’s all fact.

We’re not telling anyone what to do. But we hope that people can step back, realize the truth, and start making informed decisions based on fact, and not hunger pains. Just like no one is forcing you to eat a steak, we’re not shoving a veggie burger down your throat, but we do want you to know the truth that companies like McDonald’s, Hormel, and others aren’t going to show you. It’s only disturbing because it’s true.

What do you think?

Stay loud!

It makes me so angry when people think they have the right to end somethings life just to make theirs easier. why can’t we just start respecting life without stupid people talking about their “rights”?

Omg, this is exactly what I a have been saying to my mother, before I even read this!

It’s so annoying when people say “I respect you, so respect me.” The animals have no say in this…

And another one people say a lot is, Well everyone does it, everyone eats meat. But “every-one” used to be racist against black people, and the african-american or “colored” people used to be confined too, and treated evilly.

You know what hurts more? They argue with you about how you’re doing something wrong by being Vegan and when you try to mention how bad it is that they eat meat, they say that it’s their choice. Well, isn’t it MY choice not to eat meat?

    EH.
I’m a vegan and dont agree with the first bolded statement.
I wouldn’t compare eating meat to any of those things because eating meat is learnt. For example, we are given animals products as an infant/toddler/child/etc. (ie. chocolate milk, jarred baby food, etc) by our parents (unless you were raised vegan or vegetarian). When we were little we relied on our parents to raise us. This is how people were raised and it’s majority (unfortunatly us vegans are the minority)making eating meat “socially acceptable.” Yes, eating meat is wrong and it is very cruel, but you cannot compare that to rapists and individuals who beat their children.

You are so right and I agree with so many of the comments. I go vegetarian next month (don’t have money to buy food until then)and my dad keeps telling me that peta is *FAKED* and that most farms don’t do that. The only reason my mom is going vegetarian (and not even completely) is because its supposed to help her disability (which I doubt it will). But I am so glad I have my friends wo are vegetarian to keep me strong :) and that there are other people who know all of this is true!

This article is right on point. And I no longer dine out with meat eaters, I can’t stand viewing a slab of meat in close proximity to my vegan meal and also the ensuing arguments that sometimes results. There is no justification whatsoever for eating meat. Yes, the cavemen ate meat but what type of longevity did they possess or dietary choices. We have so many flesh free dishes and so many diversified choices I can’t under stand why anyone in their right mind would eat meat, it makes me very depressed and there is really no solution.

The first one” Why are you telling people what to do” is always my case! I lost too many friends, because I EXPLAINED to them why I don’t eat animals!
I think it really bugged them to see that I have this great will power and they are this great bunch of losers who are too lazy to think again about what is in their plate. So they thought it’s easier to just get away from me.
If I just knew this stuff then…

Yes, I agree people should get educated and CARE about where meat actually comes from, but they won’t if vegans and vegetarians will call meat eaters stupid, immoral, small minded etc. We have to understand one, people won’t listen and agree if they’ve been called small minded by vegans. You as well can’t tell them that they HAVE to do something, most of them will do the opposite just in spite. And for those for who doesn’t work showing shocking videos of suffering animals (that did it to me), the best way how to make them rethink is telling how being vegetarian/vegan is actually good for themselves.

So glad you posted this! I don’t know how many times I’ve gotten “stop shoving your opinions on people!” even though I would be explaining to people why I’m Vegan. Honestly though, the worst thing anyone has ever said to me, reguarding my Veganism, is: “I feel bad for you. You’re gonna get so sick when you get older”. Truth is, and you can put this on your blog, it’s not just being Vegan, is ANY diet one can follow and still needs to get the proper nutrients. Still, Vegan/Vegetarian diet’s the healthiest.

I only recently went vegetarian (& going strong!) and I’m already getting criticized for it. It is ridiculous to hear what people have to say and how wrong they really are! Thanks for posting this because this has been how I’ve felt for the past 2 weeks when people think I’m crazy and my beliefs are stupid. I was in a humanities class this Monday where we were talking about whether or not morality requires vegetarianism. Everyone in the class seemed to think they were doing no harm by eating meat and had all their edscuses until we watched a PETA video. I had never been more proud of myself to be one of the few vegetarians in the room and guilt free. :)

i can’t wait until people open their minds and close their mouths. facts don’t just disappear simply because they are ignored. someday, i hope the human race will become less arrogant and look at what’s actually around them.

It’s SO true. It’s insane how many people just DON’T care. I’ve never felt so depressed, I swear.
I mean, it does NOT matter that this is happening. Yes, people eat meat. Yes men rape women. NO, IT’S NOT OKAY. I mean, just because things happen it doesn’t mean it’s ok for them to happen! Agh! Ramble that probably makes no sense at all, but I had this discussion with these awful lady and I felt like impaling her.
    Agh!

That’s all true. Ugh. I hate when people say “don’t try and force your beliefs on ME!!” when you’re only telling them the truth. Another one of my most hated statements are “well MOST farms aren’t like that!” >:( Yes, actually, they are.
