Using animals for entertainment is NOT cool. Our enjoyment isn’t worth the pain and suffering that these animals endure. Hopefully Kmart learned its lesson last week.

What happened:

  • Kmart planned on using a live shark in a commercial.
  • The shark was shipped from New York to Los Angeles.
  • He was kept in an aboveground swimming pool in someone’s backyard. WTF?!
  • When the shark showed signs of stress, he was injected with adrenaline and given oxygen.
  • He was then transported AGAIN in an attempt to get more treatment.
  • He died that afternoon.

In response to the shark’s death, Julia Gallucci, an animal behavior specialist for PETA, wrote a letter to the American Humane Association (AHA), the group charged with overseeing animal use on production sets:

Sharks are sensitive animals who, in captivity, require a highly specialized and controlled environment. Given the delicate nature of this species, why would the AHA approve the transport and use of the animal?

This doesn’t sound anything like the kind of space that this shark was given. Marine animals should NEVER be kept in captivity, where they are cramped, lonely, deprived of all control over their lives, and far from their natural homes. Please, speak up for marine animals in captivity:

We need a law requiring an AHA and/or a PETA rep onsite to monitor stuff like this. Unless we could pass a law making it illegal to use animals for entertainment at all. Yeah, I like that option better.
