WTF Is the Difference?!

You’ve probably seen more than a few news stories recently about “bizarre” food findings such as calamari pig anuses, not one but TWO KFC patrons who found what appeared to be brains (and turned out to be kidneys) in their meals, and now, the infamous horse meat scandal at an Irish meat processing plant.

While this is all pretty disturbing, we’re actually more concerned that more people aren’t just as outraged that people are eating ANY animal parts—because seriously, WTF is the difference?!

CALAMARI VS. PIG ANUSES

“Calamari” is one of those nice-sounding words that restaurants use to sell something not so nice—in this case, chopped-up baby squid. Let’s really think hard about this one. Pigs’ buttholes. Chopped-up babies. Pigs’ buttholes. Chopped-up babies.

What’s the difference? Nothing. They both come from once living, breathing animals who were hacked apart and killed for someone’s dinner, and if you think that one is more acceptable to eat than the other, your taste buds probably need an intervention. ASAP.

CHICKEN KIDNEYS VS. THE REST OF THE CHICKEN

The public outrage surrounding two separate incidents in which shocked patrons found “wrinkled brains” (kidneys) on their trays at KFC is truly baffling. Yes, finding chicken organs in your food is gross. Want to know what else is just as gross? Finding ANY chicken body parts in your food.

What’s the difference? Nothing. Finding a chicken kidney in your food should be no more disturbing than finding a chicken wing, leg, breast, or “finger.” Every single one of those parts comes from chickens who have their throats slit before being tossed into a tank of scalding-hot water—sometimes while they’re still alive. If you don’t want body parts in your food, the solution is simple: DON’T EAT BODY PARTS.

HORSE MEAT VS. MEAT FROM ANY OTHER ANIMAL

People around the world are freaking out about meat from an Irish meat processor that contained up to 75 percent horse flesh. As far as the outrage goes, we’re with you on this one. It’s totally unacceptable to kill horses and turn them into hamburger meat. Also unacceptable? Killing COWS—or any other animal, for that matter—and turning them into hamburger meat.

What’s the difference? Nothing. There’s no difference in the way that cows and horses are slaughtered for food. If you’re upset that horses are being forced onto transport trucks and hauled long distances in all weather extremes only to be hoisted by one leg and have their throats slit, you should be upset that the exact same thing happens to every cow who is killed for food, too.

*******************************************************************

The facts are indisputable, folks. If you’re not OK with eating pig anuses, chicken kidneys, or horse meat and you’re thinking now that maybe eating dead squid babies, chicken boobs, and hacked-apart cows isn’t such a great idea either, maybe you should just go vegan already. 😉

Omg. Love this. My whole family eats meat and fhey all have the same lame excuses for eating meat and were going to force me to eat it (ive been vegetarian my whole life) because my soy products were too expensive. Lame. Theyre also the type of people to freak out about horse meat then go eat a few dozen hamburgers. Seriously?

I could not agree more… It makes me laugh every time one of my friends is like “oh I wouldn’t eat that ______ (insert any type of meat that people don’t traditional eat) and I think how is that different from the chicken that you ate without giving a second thought. If people aren’t okay with eating horses than how are they okay with eating a cow. If they aren’t okay with eating pig anus than how come you are okay with eating baby squid? If you aren’t okay with eating a chicken kidney why are you okay with eating any other part of the chicken? People are such hypocrites and they don’t even relies it!!! AHHH I love this article because it is so true!!!! Thank you Whitney for writing this you are just so right!!! One of my favourite things to say when someone questions me on why I am a vegan if they are giving me a hard time I ask them if they would eat a dog and they are disgusted they can’t even bare to think about it then I tell them of all the similarities between dogs and pig (love the woof campaign it was one of my favourites) and I ask them if it is so gross to eat a dog than how come it is totally okay to eat a pig?

I just now saw the article and I want to say HOW glad I am you wrote it Whitney, and of course how much I agree with the comments made! It is just frustrating -the least I can say, because the word does not actually explain the way I feel- hearing all those “shocking news(!!!!)” that travel around the world about the “exposition” (woow!!!!!) of the horse-meat or other “forbidden animal parts” sold on stores. That is to say, people get SHOCKED finding out they eat other parts of the same animal or the same parts of another animal!!! WOWW!! That is a problem indeed!! Because, if a human was killed and eaten by other humans, the thing that would worry the rest of us would be the fact that the kidneys, for example, would be eaten as well, and not only the arms, the legs, the breast, the ribs…. It totally makes sense!!!!!!!!! You know… as Albert Einstein once said, and I like to use that a lot: “Only two things are infinite: the universe and the human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the former.”

thank you for this….from a vegetarian in the process of becoming vegan i get quizzed constantly on what my views are and why i chose to become a vegetarian. their replies to my rebottles are always if we weren’t meant to eat meat then why are we at the top of the food chain? but we aren’t we can be eaten just as easily if we didn’t have technology. this article will help me find the confidence to prove my views right to these nagging people. thanks again!

I totally agree… i am a vegetarian and the only one in my family. When we saw the “horse meat scandal” on the news, i was shocked that they had got away with it for so long. And then my family and friends started to say: “OMG i can’t eat horse! that is so horrible! think of the poor horses…” And i have felt like screaming at them every day: “YOU WON’T EAT HORSE.. OKAY… BUT YOU WILL EAT CHICKENS AND DUCKS, LAMBS AND COWS, FISH AND EVEN RABBIT!” Some people are so ignorant to the fact that like those poor little horses they ate, there are also calves and chicks and ducklings being raised just for a good taste!!! I am definitely with you on this, Peta, people can be sad about eating horse, but its NO DIFFERENT than eating pork, beef, lamb, chicken and duck!! x

I love this article. People think I’m crazy when I ask them what’s the difference between two different things to prove a point. They get so defensive Especially if I ask them if it happened to an animal they love, like a pet. They usually say “It’s different, it’s a dog, not a cow.”, or something along the lines of that.

I completely agree. When will people understand that it doesn’t matter what part you eat?
