Mission: Urge This Bar to End Its Cruel Goldfish Races

There’s no shortage of fun bar activities—darts, pool, arm wrestling, bingo, and trivia are guaranteed Ws. But PB Shore Club in San Diego, CA, chooses to host a much different activity almost every Wednesday night: Goldfish racing. 😳

In these ridiculous races, human participants blow through straws to force fish to swim across water-filled gutters. As if this didn’t cause enough stress and pain to the fish, the winner typically gets to keep their fish. Handing out living, feeling fish as prizes to tipsy humans with no clue how to care for them? 🤦 Yeah, that won’t end well.

Former peta2 intern Justice Owens makes this clear: “Goldfish feel pain, and they can live up to decades, but…at PB Shore Club, they can barely survive the week.” Justice has organized several protests and hit up the PB Shore Club to urge the bar to end the races. As Justice points out, the bar is free to plan any events that don’t harm animals (karaoke, hello?), but it continues to “profit off of the torture of goldfish for entertainment.” 😠

If you think goldfish deserve better, join Justice in calling for PB Shore Club to host only fish-free events. You can earn 150 peta2 points from our Rewards Program by following these simple steps:

1. Comment on one of PB Shore Club’s IG posts and/or email PB Shore Club urging the bar to end its goldfish races. You can use any of the talking points below, but remember that your own words are always more effective:

  • Please stop hosting goldfish races! These events can cause the fish severe stress and pain.
  • Goldfish can feel pain and fear—they don’t deserve to suffer for entertainment.
  • Giving goldfish away as prizes often leads to neglect and premature death.
  • Arm wrestling, trivia, and live music would be much more fun for everyone than goldfish racing.
  • Fish aren’t decorations or toys—they’re sentient beings with thoughts and feelings.
