Mission: Help Save a Pod of Orcas Trapped in Ice Before It’s Too Late

Update (February 7, 2024): Thank you to everyone who contacted officials in Japan about the group of orcas who were trapped in thick sea ice. News sources now report that some of the ice melted or shifted enough that the orcas were able to escape!

These amazing animals are now free to live as nature intended, but other animals around the world are still in dire need, like those trapped at the Miami Seaquarium. Please help us get Miami-Dade County’s mayor to shut this notorious animal prison down immediately!

Original post:

In the early morning of February 6 in Japan, a witness hit up the Rausu Coast Guard to report a heartbreaking sight: a pod of orcas trapped in an ice drift not far from shore. 😰🐬

Drone footage shows the estimated 13 orcas—approximately four of whom are reportedly calves—unable to free themselves. The witness reportedly told a local news station that they seemed to be struggling to breathe. 😱 This kind of situation has legit taken place before: In 2005, a pod of orcas was trapped in drift ice in the same area—and after no intervention was made, most of them died. 😭
