Mission: Live Geckos Kept in Tiny Containers Sold as Trinkets at Ottawa Comiccon

Comic book conventions (comiccons) are supposed to be fun events where comic book fandoms mingle. 🦸💥🤝 But exploiting animals completely kills the vibe—and last September, Ottawa Comiccon in Canada hosted a booth that sold geckos. 😨🦎 Help us urge the event not to sell animals in the future!

Why Is Selling Geckos Bad?

Geckos can live up to 20 years, and they have complex preferences and needs. 😮 When they’re taken from their homes in nature and forced to live in captivity, they have hella requirements, including the following:

  • Roomy aquariums
  • UV lights
  • Ceramic heat emitters and infrared lamps
  • Humidity controls
  • Calcium supplements

These are just a few of the things you’ll need if you want to be a gecko guardian. 😶 When humans aren’t fully prepared for the responsibility, time, effort, and expense involved and just spontaneously buy a gecko, they’re setting that reptile up to suffer. 😔
