It’s clear that America is bacon-obsessed, and the trend looks like it’s here to stay. I love bacon just as much as anyone, but once I learned that mother pigs spend most of their miserable lives in gestation crates that are too small for them to turn around in and baby pigs are castrated without painkillers, I knew there was something wrong with eating bacon.

And when I saw photos of terrified pigs on their way to slaughter and then videos of a pig slaughterhouse, the decision to stop eating meat was easy.

These intelligent, sensitive animals shouldn’t have to endure torture just for a few minutes of taste sensation for me. Causing someone a lifetime of pain for a few minutes of pleasure is beyond selfish—it’s cruel.

Going vegan was the best decision I’ve ever made. I am happier and healthier, and I feel great knowing that no one has to suffer for my meals. Do I still love bacon? Of course I do! But being vegan doesn’t mean you have to give up bacon.

Here’s a list of my favorite “bacon” products:

Lightlife Smart Bacon

When I first went vegan, I thought I’d never be able to enjoy a BLT again. But then, I discovered Lightlife Smart Bacon. It’s widely available at many chain grocery stores, and it’s super-easy to make.

Sweet Earth Hickory & Sage Smoked Seitan Bacon

Sweet Earth Natural Foods

This stuff is a little bit fancier and delicious. It also goes great on vegan BLTs or alongside your favorite tofu scramble.

Betty Crocker Bac-Os Bits

Betty Crocker

This is a great go-to when you just need a sprinkle of bacon flavor in dishes such as potato salad. Bac-Os can be found basically anywhere, too.

Tofurky Smoky Maple Bacon Marinated Tempeh

Turtle Island Foods, Inc.
The Tofurky brand offers some fantastic vegan sausages, and its smoky maple “bacon” is awesome, too.

Upton’s Naturals Bacon Seitan

Upton's Naturals

Another vegan bacon that’s easy to fry up in minutes.

McCormick Bac’n Pieces™ Bacon Flavored Bits

Another brand of bacon-flavored bits to sprinkle on just about anything.

Phoney Baloney’s Coconut Bacon

Phoney Baloney's

Coconut bacon does have a slight coconut-y taste to it, but it’s great for sprinkling on sandwiches, salads, and even some desserts (maple bacon donuts anyone?).

BONUS: Try this vegan bacon grease for cooking!
