Charleston, South Carolina, is known for its Southern charm, historic architecture, ghost tours, gorgeous beaches, and warm weather. Chucktown’s scenery makes it clear why Travel + Leisure magazine named it the World’s Best City in 2016.

It also has a fast-growing vegan community. If you’re planning to pay a visit soon, get ready to eat. Here’s a list of some of our favorite vegan-friendly joints in The Holy City:

Barberitos

Similar to Chipotle (which also has multiple locations in Charleston), Barberitos offers tofu as a protein in all its tacos, bowls, and burritos. And it makes things even easier by having a vegan burrito on the menu. P.S. The guac is delish.

Creature of habit. ?

Basil

All of this Thai restaurant’s tasty curries are vegan if you order them with tofu—so keep calm and curry on. Many of its other dishes can easily be made vegan—for example, you can ask that the spring rolls be made with tofu instead of shrimp.

Black Bean Co.

Black Bean Co. offers vegan pancakes, smoothies, wraps, and even vegan cookies at some locations! With multiple locations across the city, it’s the perfect place to stop and refuel your body with yummy plants.

CO

Ask for the vegan menu at CO, and you will not be disappointed.

D’Allesandro’s

This hip hidden gem, which is tucked away in downtown Charleston, offers pizzas topped with tempeh, delicious veggies, and vegan cheese.

Dell’z Deli

Dell’z Deli isn’t entirely vegan, but it has a vegan-friendly menu and offers dishes like nachos, vegan chicken cordon bleu, vegan shrimp wraps, acorn squash bowls, and so much more. Pro tip: The vegan Jazzy Pizza is a must.

Earth Fare

A grocery store may not always be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about dining out, but this health-food store is different. Earth Fare’s hot and cold bars offer a variety of vegan meats (the mock chicken salad is EVERYTHING), soups, salads, pizzas, pastries, and more.

Y'all it's seriously so good

Gnome Café

This entirely vegan café is perfect for breakfast or lunch—or both! The menu is chock-full of vegan versions of traditional Southern dishes like mac and “cheese,” grits bowls, and biscuits with gravy. It also offers a variety of pastries. YUM.

Ladles

Not only does this place have vegan vegetable soup, banana bread, and various dairy-free cheeses on its menu, it also has “Vegan Fridays,” on which the specials are all vegan.

Lotus Vietnamese Cuisine

Ask your server for the vegetarian menu for delicious, authentic Vietnamese options like veggie pho, dumplings, spring rolls, bánh xèo, and bún! *Drooling*

Mellow Mushroom

Not only does Mellow Mushroom offer red sauce, olive oil, or barbecue sauce as a base for its pizzas, it also has vegan toppings such as tofu, tempeh, and Daiya cheese.

Mex 1 Coastal Cantina

Although it’s not all vegan, Mex 1 has delicious veggie bowls, tacos, chips, guacamole, and house-made salsas. Try the Shrooms Baja Bowl or the Shroomer Taco (be sure to hold the cheese). Each meal comes with free chips and salsa, which is a win-win.

I'm just here for the citrus agave vinaigrette dressing. ?
