What Is Tofu?

Tofu is a soy-based food. People use soybeans to make soymilk, which is then curdled and pressed into solid white blocks. Many vegans (like us) love tofu because it can be used in so many ways. And while it’s well known as a fave vegan option—which we extra-firmly stand behind 😉—anyone who doesn’t have a soy allergy can enjoy it in its many forms.

Is It Healthy?

Heck, yeah! One cup has a whopping 20 grams of protein, plus magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, potassium, calcium, iron, B vitamins, vitamin K, antioxidants, and fiber. At the same time, it has no cholesterol and can help lower your risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other life-threatening health issues. 🤯 And no matter what the meatheads try to tell you, soy products don’t affect testosterone levels.

How Can You Enjoy It?

There are infinite ways to enjoy it. For example, you can bake, fry, skewer, and blend it. It tastes great on its own, or you can season it, cover it in sauce, or add it to any dish you want. It works well in appetizers, entrees, snacks, and even desserts. The real question is “How can’t I enjoy it?”

What Types of Tofu Are There?

There are two basic types—silken and regular. The silken type has a softer consistency than the regular type and is great for blending and puréeing. It often comes in soft, firm, or extra-firm varieties. The regular (block) type is pressed and works well baked and fried. Varieties include soft, medium, firm, extra-firm, and super-firm.
