OK, I’ll admit it: I was once a TBell addict. When I went vegan, I thought for sure that I could never indulge in my favorite not-so-healthy but oh-so-tasty fast-food fave, but I was wrong! Since Taco Bell’s beans, potatoes, tortillas, and guacamole are all vegan on their own, my go-to dishes at Taco Bell, with just a few tweaks, could be made totally animal-free.
In fact, Taco Bell just launched a new certified vegetarian menu on its website and mobile app, and most of the items can be made vegan just by leaving out the cheese and sour cream! Here’s how ya do it:
Menu item: Taco Salad
How to order it: Substitute beans for beef (they don’t charge for this, woo!), leave out the sour cream and cheese, and add potatoes, guacamole, and red sauce.
Menu Item: Bean Burrito or Black Bean Burrito
How to order it: No cheese and add potatoes. Try guacamole on the side. Or, you can say, “Fresco Style,” which means they remove the cheese and sauce and replace it with pico de gallo—yum!
Menu Item: Seven-Layer Burrito
How to order it: Order it without sour cream, rice, and cheese, and add potatoes and pico de gallo. Add red sauce for a spicy kick.
Menu Item: Crunchwrap or Double Decker Taco
How to order it: Ask for beans instead of beef, and say no to cheese and sour cream.
Menu Item: Tostada
How to order it: Just say “no cheese!” and hold the creamy chipotle sauce. For a small fee you can add chunky salsa or guac.
Menu Item: Tacos
How to order it: Ask for beans instead of beef and no cheese. You can add pico de gallo and guac to make them extra delicious.
Menu Item: Mexican Pizza
How to order it: OK, this one can be a bit trickier. Substitute beef for beans and remove the cheese. You can add guac to the top if you want or take this baby home and nuke it with some Daiya on top (I’ve done this, and it’s amazing!).
Menu Item: Veggie Power Burrito
How to order it: Ask for this bad boy without cheese, sour cream, rice, or avocado ranch sauce and you’re good to go.
Menu Item: Cinnamon Twists
And don’t forget: Taco Bell’s cinnamon twists are accidentally vegan, so you can have dessert on the cheap, too!
Now, just a friendly tip here: Don’t go overboard on the fast food. Although these things are tasty, they’re not the healthiest, so make sure you kick it old school and cook some dinners yourself once in a while. Got it? If you’re running low on cash, taking a road trip, or in a pinch, keep these tips in mind and indulge! Did you know Taco Bell was a secret vegan paradise? 🙂
