New England hardcore outfit Defeater has set itself apart from peers through a string of releases laced with sincerity and willing to push boundaries. Whether being environmentally responsible or socially aware or creating narrative themes tinged with historical perspective, Defeater continues to set an example for what the future of the genre can be.
Vocalist Derek Archambault recently visited the peta2 office in Los Angeles to discuss his vegan diet. Growing up surrounded by like-minded individuals strengthened Derek’s resolve to explore animal rights further. Saying of his decision to cut meat from his diet, “Once I got into it, it was unstoppable. I realized I didn’t need it at all, and you find you have more in common with all these people that you look up to. You feel like more of a part of the whole hardcore and punk scene.”
Watch the interview below, along with an acoustic performance of “But Breathing” from Defeater’s latest release, Empty Days & Sleepless Nights, and “Keep Track/Lose Track” from Derek’s solo project, Alcoa.
