Make Do And Mend Acoustic Performance

Rise Records post-hardcore band Make Do And Mend has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the hardest working, most sincere bands in punk rock. Years of touring alongside fellow peta2 friends like Hostage Calm, Balance And Composure, and Touché Amoré has solidified the band as a staple in the scene.

We recently caught up with vocalist James Carroll for an intimate performance of “Desert Lily” and to discuss how living a cruelty-free, vegan lifestyle has impacted his life for the better.

I personally believe that living a meat-free, dairy-free diet is the best thing that one can do to improve their own personal health, to improve the health of the world and their economy, the welfare of countless animals—and that’s always been something that’s really weighed heavy on my mind.

—James Carroll

I speak up for animals, because humans don’t see that animals dislike being treated bad.

Animals can’t express themselves with their voice so I feel like I should be their voice. Everyone should be treated right, human or animal.

I speak up for animals because they can’t speak up for themselves. People will continue to hurt them because they can and the animals can’t do a thing about it. But we all can. It is wrong for animals to be treated the way they are treated. Which is why I speak up for them

I speak out for animals because I love them, they may not speak our language but that doesn’t mean they don’t love and feel pain. I see no difference between my dog, cat, and ferrets compared to a cow, chicken or any other animal!

I grew up in the punkrock scene. That’s one of the reasons I became vegan. They really talk about it in their music. So it seemed very natural for me to become a vegan. Of course the fact that animals have to die for our food (and other stuff) convinced me the most. But punkrock had to do with it.
So it would be great to receive an album written by punkrock dudes who speak up for animals!

Speak when another’s voice isn’t heard. Just because there are people out there who may not be able to understand or connect with animals- doesn’t mean they shouldn’t respect them. Give to everyone and everything which you wish to receive in return. Respect an animals boundaries just as another should respect your own. Animals may not be able to speak with words but they can speak with action and expression. You can’t tell be that right before an animal is abused or has been abused they are showing signs to continue the abuse or that they like it. I’ve never seen blood/cuts and bruises bring happiness. Ever. Just as there are laws against abuse to humans- animals should be given the same fair treatment. Speak out and stop abuse

I speak out for animals because i believe that we human beings take advantage of other species. I think it is unfair that we base their intelligence off of our ability to understand them. I believe that they have a voice and deserve to be heard, and it is our job to make sure of it.

I speak out for animals, because a language barrier isn’t a good enough reason to kill or abuse someone. Speciesism is sick. I have a strong sense of justice, and with so many vegan alternatives, people choosing to eat meat just because they like the taste, and because the animals can’t really fight back, or explain why you shouldn’t eat them for themselves, is gratuitous. And frankly, repulsive.

I speak out for animals because I believe ending animal cruelty is the first step towards a much needed revolution. Our society has become very self-indulgent; we take our Eco system and environments, these animals, and even our own individual health for granted. We have been conditioned to believe that all of those things are infinite, when they are not. I believe if we can end the abuse toward these animals, in the way that veganism does, then we are able to put a thoughtfulness and consciousness back into our society. In the modern day culture that we have created, we are lacking that type of thoughtfulness in more aspects of our lives than not. We have all become very desensitized towards cruelty and we need to gain back our humanity; I believe veganism and speaking out for animals is a good place to start that fight.

I speak out for animals because they don’t have a voice of their own. It’s not fair for them to have to be killed and eaten and abused all because they can’t stand up for themselves.

No living being should ever be treated as cruelly as most of the humans of this world choose to treat them.

All living creatures have a place on this Earth. The life of every living creature is a precious and perfect thing. Every thing deserves a life, we have the chance to give it to them.

Why I speak out for animals is because they can’t speak for themselves. People think that animals aren’t like humans and think that they have power of animals. People will treat animals badly and poorly because they think the human race is the greater than any other race. In which makes me want to speak out for animals is so that they can get the deserved respect and life they were meant to have and shouldn’t be mistreated just because they’re animals. I want to make a change in the world and hopefully we will accomplish this.

I speak for the animals, because I am now aware of the health issues I experienced all this time. It is wise for me to choose a plant-based diet on breakfast and lunch, and sometimes at dinner. I don’t want my arteries get clogged. When I’m ready to become a vegan for my birthday, hopefully, I will encourage my family and church family to do the same. That way, they won’t even think about fried chicken, fried fish and what not, or even greens with bits of meat inside. To me, it is not healthy at all! When I serve myself to those greens, I was careful not to add bits of that meat inside them, or don’t want it like that at all.
