To do more to help our four-legged friends, be on the lookout for other animals who may need help. Don’t be afraid to report abuse or neglect. Never ignore a stray or injured animal—you might be his or her only hope; if you’re unable to help, call your local animal control or humane agency. Do you know people who leave their dog (or cat) outside? Politely encourage them to keep their animals inside, especially during harsh weather. If they refuse, make sure that the animal has adequate food, water, and shelter, and call the authorities if an animal’s life is in immediate danger. And we shouldn’t have to say this, but just in case you’ve forgotten, we want to remind you never to buy an animal from a breeder or a pet store. Every time a puppy or kitten is born, an animal in a shelter or on the streets loses a chance at finding a home.
