Going vegan means adopting a more compassionate lifestyle, eating in a way that’s better for the environment, and having a healthier body. What it doesn’t mean is giving up your favorite foods. “Veganizing” many nonvegan recipes is much easier than you think!
Just follow these simple tips, and you’ll be ready to start cookin’:
1. Replace 1 egg with 2 Tbsp. water + 1 Tbsp. oil + 2 tsp. baking powder. This is a great egg replacer because it has a neutral taste and makes baked goods rise.
2. This one is easy: Swap chicken broth for veggie broth.
3. Instead of shredded meats, try jackfruit. This versatile fruit will absolutely blow your mind.
4. Switch things up by spreading hummus on your sandwiches instead of mayo. (If you’re not into hummus, try an egg-free mayo like Vegenaise or Trader Joe’s Vegan Spread.)
5. Who needs milk from a cow’s boob? Nobody! Cow’s milk is one of the easiest ingredients to replace. Choose from any nondairy milk, including almond, hemp, soy, rice, oat, rice, and others.
6. Swap dairy yogurt for a vegan version from the store, or use chia pudding.
7. Use aquafaba (the liquid from a can of chickpeas) instead of egg whites. Yes, this actually works. It’s vegan magic!
8. Replace 1 cup buttermilk with 1 cup unsweetened nondairy milk + 2 Tbsp. lemon juice whisked together until the texture is creamy.
9. Instead of honey, try delicious agave.
10. For chewy baked goods like brownies and cookies, replace 1 egg with 1/2 ripe banana.
11. When baking a cake, swap out butter for the same amount of mashed avocado.
12. For gluten-free brownies, use mashed cooked black beans instead of flour.
So there you have it! Vegan replacements that will make any recipe cruelty-free and delicious.
BILLIONS of animals are killed for food each year in the U.S. The easiest way to help the chickens, cows, pigs, fish, and other animals who are raised and slaughtered for food is to stop eating them! Not only will you be saving more than 100 animals each year, you’ll also be healthier and helping to reduce climate change and world hunger. Plain and simple: Going vegan is the right thing to do.
