We hear “seafood” and think of lobsters, fish, and shrimp. But why? I reject the term “seafood,” because there’s no such thing—there are only sea animals. Choosing to eat them doesn’t make them food—it just makes them suffer.

dead fish, fishing, fishing cruelty, is fishing cruel, do fish feel pain

Fish feel pain, form friendships, teach their young, and make memories. Lobsters can detect temperature changes as small as one degree. So yeah, they can absolutely feel it when they’re boiled alive. In fact, their brains lack the system that would allow them to go into shock, so they feel it even more than you would.

Plus, for every 1 pound of animals intended for consumption caught, 5 pounds of “bycatch”—animals such as dolphins, turtles, and sharks—are caught along with them. Trillions of pounds of animals sucked out of the ocean every year to be eaten = a lot of bycatch.

And for what? We don’t need to kill anyone to get the flavors of the sea onto our plates. Whichever sea animal you used to eat, a compassionate person somewhere in the world has already created an improved vegan version of it. Check out some of the many vegan seafood options:

I don’t want to scare you (I mean, I do a little ?), but eating sea animals can be really bad for you. A recent study by researchers at UCLA and Loyola Marymount University found that 47 percent of sushi was mislabeled. The authors noted that the fraud undermines environmental regulations, presents unexpected health risks, and interferes with consumers’ ability to make informed choices.

Also, IT CAN KILL YOU. And sushi has been known to give people parasite infections (think larvae and worms wriggling around in the fish), and doctors warn that the problem is on the rise in the U.S.

BARF. Instead of risking it, just eat vegan seafood—which is actually food—because it’s not made from sea animals. And pair it with the following vegan dips and seasonings. Now everyone’s happy and no one has parasites—yay!
